Why does my Windows folder freeze up when I right click?

Anytime I right click on an icon in a Windows XP Pro folder (like another folder, file or an app), my folder freezes up and must be force-quitted. The same thing happens when I left-click once and then go to the File, Edit, or View tabs. This has been going on for a while so I'm not sure what exactly happened before the problem started. Thanks in advance.
