That depends on which version of Vista you're talking about. The Ultimate version has some new utilities and supposedly better security than XP. It has a redesigned interface which takes up a lot of memory. It has the Media Center program for displaying TV, movies, pics, etc.

I've used it and switched back to XP because of some compatibility issues.

As far as why it was designed, I think they just wanted something new to sell. It really doesn't do much more than XP and it does it more slowly usually.
Vista won't let you download pirated stuff, it won't let you rip good mp3s,

it doesn't play nice with itunes,

vista's just not ready yet. xp is more mature.
