I am working on a computer with Windows XP Home. It was locking up on start up (It would lock up at the "Windows is starting" screen. I put in the Windows CD (accidently the Pro edition) and went to the recovery mode. I just looked through the directory and that was it (couldn't remember my DOS commands :-) ).
When I restarted the computer booted up to the log on screen (taking a long time ~4-5 min). But after the "Windows is starting" screen a box appears saying I need to activate windows. If I click 'no' it continues on to the log on screen. If I click 'yes' it freezes. The same box appears at the log in screen when I try and login. If I click 'no' it trys to log the user
off and freezes. If I click 'yes' it hangs. The cursor still moves but nothing happens (4 hours is the longest I've had it running).
I can only get into windows under safe mode with the dos prompt. All others ask me to activate windows.
How can I fix this?
Windows XP hangs after asking for activation.?microsoft works
A complete reinstall of XP Home.
