I'm using windows xp and my msn messenger notified me of an update to version 8.1, but when i went to download it a message came up stating: "windows live program cannot be installed on windows server, win xp pro x64, or any version earlier than service pack 2". I have no idea what to do.

Since Tuesday Microsoft has been having a lot if issues with this new messenger, stick with your current (older) one until Microsoft can figure it out.
My laptop got duped into installing the update, and the IM client has been a basket case ever since, I uninstalled it and returned to the old and cruddy version for me.
