If the bios will allow the external drive to be the boot drive you can load XP on it. If not you will have to have an internal second drive. This will sure give you 2 operating systems on one computer.
Yes you must install them on different partitions or HDD's.
you can only run one or the other not both take your pick I stay with XP
create a new parition from the 250gb drive for xp.
You most likely will not be able to run XP off of an external drive, you will need to shrink your Vista partition and create a second one for XP. However if you simply install XP normally you will not be able to boot Vista, you will need to repair Vista's bootloader. Details can be found here: http://apcmag.com/5485/dualbooting_vista...
Yes , u can install 2 or more operating systems in the same HDD provided :

1 ) they are partitioned and each Operating system goes on each partition

2 ) File system is appropriate for each

3 ) Installed in order [ oldest version to newest ] { Win 98 - Win XP - Win Vista } { get it ? }

In your situation if u didn't install Win XP before Vista , you have to un install vista then install XP then Install Vista { tough luck } { try searching for softwares which help...don't think there are }

also check whether your computer BIOS supports it... { i think it will considering you got pretty descent specs so it may not be an old model }
get virtualpc. i have win98, 2k, xp, ubuntu, mac 68k and dsl linux on the same pc
you can dual boot
One way to do it is have 2 drives and install Vista on your master drive and XP on your slave drive.
yes ... install VMware ... this will allow you to have multiple OS on one machine without the need to partition the disk

for example i have windows XP and server 2003 on my PC using VMware.. best thing VMware is usualy free
You can certainly install as many versions of windows / other OS's but you can only run one at once. Its a bit like you can have two cars in your garage but you cant drive them both at the same time.
