Internet and Microsoft Windows Piracy?

My friend Rachael recently bought a computer from a fly by night computer shop and she believes that the operating system on it, Windows XP Pro is pirated. I checked it and it definately appears to be so.

Is there anyway she can report it to Microsoft or something and get a legitimate version of Windows for free?

Microsoft is not going to reimburse your friend for this. It is not their responsibility that your friend made a not-so-good purchase.

Ever heard of "Buyer beware"? The first rule of purchasing is to buy from a legitimate seller, hopefully one which has been in business for a while and enjoys a good reputation for support. This is as important, if not more important, than price. Trust me.

no no and no,if you buy an illegal copy, you will not be rewarded for reporting it to be illegal.
Only from the computer shop if they said it was legitimate. Microsoft wont do anything for you. You can report it but trying to talk to them is like trying to talk to the president.
Unfortunately the answer to that is no, you won't be able to get XP Pro for free. This happened to me a while back when I bought a laptop on ebay. I called Microsoft and they told me that I would have to contact the seller. Or buy a new key for $139.00. I did find one online for $100.00 that was legal, you may be able to find it for even less now that VISTA is out.
if u own a licensed version then u have to do re-installation with that CD.

other wise u have to buy new licensed version.. you may also make current installation legal by paying around 250 $ on the microsoft website.. this way u will not have to install the windows again and the current registry will be automatically replaced with registered one by microsoft on internet. plus u will also receive original cd of XP on mail.
