My date and time on my pc running xp changes, i changed battery, still didn't help, anyone know the answer?internet browser

Is the date in the Pc BIOS set correctly as it will reset if you change the battery

I cant (dont know how) to install windows from scratch?!?

I recently purchased a new computer; therefore a friend told me to completely clean out my old drive of the other computer. He gave me a webroot erase boot disk. Well it completely cleaned the drive now I cant install Windows XP Pro. Im totally clueless in this aspect I changed the bios to boot from a cd but when I restart with the Windows cd in it says

Verifying DMI pool data ........

boot from cd:

a disk error occurred

press ctrl + alt+ del to restart

I have been trying to research this but with no luck. I only got as far as to figuring out that I need some sort of boot disk.

I cant (dont know how) to install windows from scratch?!?windows messenger

You have some Xp components missing on your cd, get anther Cd, do not even try to force it to install that, because later you get problems, because usually Windows Xp, is very easy to install, fist insert th Xp Cd in th CD drive, restart your computer just keep clicking on any button while you restarting (booting ) your computer, you will see the option to start from Cd, then you have choices, one of them is to install , chose it, and you are done,

since there is a missing component it will keep giving you error,

do not forget that when you copy a CD to put your folder view option to show the hidden files, if you don't do that you will "NOT" copy these files to your new desk ( which I think it is your Cd problem now)

Good luck

I cant (dont know how) to install windows from scratch?!?microsoft works internet explorer

Use Ubuntu. Ditch windows
Well you have to have the original disks. Make sure they are present.
you do need a boot disk, you have to have a boot disk in order to install the drivers for the cd-rom to work, without those drivers, the cd-rom is not going to be able to read the new cd, but since you have a computer that you can use, you can install the hard drive onto it, and use the computer your using now to install the windows on to the hard drive.
if u got like a dell the can help u u could try testing the f1... keys
ok, here is what you need

if you do have original CD of XP or even if you not LOL you will need a boot disk

But, there is easier way of corse LOL

if you do have ability to cpy that disk (xp cd), I mean software like nero or ISO you can contact me and I'll give you Boot.ini file.

after that you just add that file to other files of cd XP and all together burn on new CD, using software. It will ask you, when you choose option MAKE bootable cd, to locate and insert boot.ini file. that's where you will point out my file and burn

after that you just restart your computer with new CD and it will guide you all the way with onscrean instructions.
U are on the right track. U'll need a bootable winXP installation disk!!
Okay here are the steps,

1. Restart PC enter the bios usually pressing delete when starting up.

2. In Bios Change the #1 Boot Priority to from cdrom.

3. Exit and save changes.

4. Put in your system disk(Windows Xp Pro) then exit the installer be sure not to install.

5. Restart Again.

6. It should say when starting up to press any key to boot from disk. Press any Key

7. The Microsoft Xp installer will open up it will ask witch hard drive to store it on select the main one click options then delete, it will say are you sure you wish to erase every thing on this disk, say yes. Then If you have another hard drive select it and click delete. Do the same thing to it.

8. Then Select the main one again and say install to it. And It Will install.

9. Walah

10. O yeah and the fix to your problem, Make sure all boot places in the bios are set to cd-rom.

Hope this helps if not email me boarderdude71994@yahoo.com

Why is everything is running so slowly on XP?

Everything was running fine until last week. Finally gave up and reinstalled Windows XP pro from scratch. Things improved for couple of days, but everything is FUBAR again. For example, it is taking 10 minutes to type this question!

Some interesting observations:

1. it takes 5 minutes to log in on MSN Messenger. The first attempt always fails and I have to manually log in.

2. The system process is taking up 50% or more of CPU time. I expect this behavior if I have too many apps running but I am only running 1 at a time now

3. the auto update downloads the files, but the shield disappears after the download is complete. I have to manually open 'Help and Support' to install the updates

4. Firefox disappears from the task bar when it loses focus. It reappears when it has focus.

I am pretty sure the last Microsoft update has FUBAR the permissions or there is a bug in an update. I can not find the app causing the problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Why is everything is running so slowly on XP?windows updates

Well, I know just the regular Windows XP needs 256 Megabytes of RAM to work properly... of course, Dell didn't tell me this when I was buying my laptop, and now it needs a RAM upgrade, so I'm mad at them... but that's less to the point.

I guess what I'm getting at is, maybe the newer version of Windows XP you're running needs more RAM to accomodate the Operating System. Try talking to a shop in the town you live in that can do a RAM job (no pun intended) on your computer, and see if that doesn't help things run more smoothly. The RAM chips aren't normally TOO expensive and the shop in my town does that kind of work for free-- you'd just have to pre-pay the RAM chip, if they have to order it, from say... Dell Computers (re-occurring theme... hooray!). I hope you find this helpful.

Why is everything is running so slowly on XP?replacement windows internet explorer

Adding RAM would be a good place to start, but there could be a problem with the software that has eben installed on teh computer.

maybe you are in the habit of checking all the emails that you receive in your inbox, whether you know the person or not, so this way you are adding viruses / trojans, or other spyware from different sources.

maybe you had virus in the data that you saved from your previous installation, so when you restored the docs, u restored viruses as well.

you visit all sorts of websites, with all sorts of spying software, ad-ware, whcih you need to get rid of.

and the possibilities are endless.

but the solutions are few,

best of them is an old english saying

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

do not click on all the links that you find on a website or in an email, even if the sender is your friend

do not open the email if you do not know the sender, and even if you do know the sender, but you see that the subject line is in-appropriate in ne regards

do not opn any email when you do not know the sender and also it has attachments, usually all email clients tell you in the list that there is an attachment in the mail. attachment from unknown people in the junk mail is 100% virus/ad-ware/spyware

do not go to the websites which are known to be problematic. incidentally msn / hotmail / microsoft website are quite problematic in as far as ad-ware is concerned. they have all sorts of ads going on in their sites alongwith cookies.

Cookies are small codes which are stored on your computer by the websites, so that the site knows that you have been there, and the site can identify you.

do not use Internet explorer

use FireFox instead, which is faster and less prone to threats, only coz not many people use it, and virus writers tend to pay more attention to Internet explorer.

anyways in both these browsers, you can set to not receive cookies from any site, and tehn you can have an exception list

in Internet Explorer you can do this by clickingon the folowing

TOOLS

INTERNET OPTIONS

PRIVACY

and then move the slider bar from medium to HIGH

by doing this what you are doing is simply not allowing any website, which is not in your safelist to store cookies on your computer.

and then to create a list of allowed sites, click on

SITES

and then type in the web address of the site eg

YAHOO.COM

and click on

ALLOW

and then list all the sites which you think you visit on a regular basis.

and also remember to delete all the browsing history, and cookies, and temporary internet files

how to delete that

click on

START

MY COMPUTER

make sure that you have set FOLDER OPTIONS to view hidden files, and show protected operating system files

C:

DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS

click on the folder which has your user name

COOKIES

select all

and DELETE all files by confirming your choice to delete

then go back one level and click on folder name

LOCAL SETTINGS

and delete the contents of the folders

HISTORY

TEMP

TEMPORARY INTERNET FOLDERS

by going into each folder and manually selecting all and deleting them

you need to do this for all the users that you have defined on your computer.

and make sure to search for other TEMP folders in the computer, and delete all the contents of all TEMP folders, coz they are temporary, and shouldnt be hanging in there in-definitely.

also I assume that you have the licensed version of XP, that entitles you to receive security updates from MS website.

make sure that you are set to automatically receive and updates from Microsoft

additionally you can install the following two software from

www.download.com

AD-AWARE by LAVASOFT

and

SPYWAREBLASTER

make sure that you type in the correcdt spellings, especially when you download AD-AWARE make sure that it is the one by LAVASOFT.

AD-AWARE scans and removes all the spy-ware and ad-ware from your computer, they provide you with an update process through the program console, where you can always get the freshest list of malicious softwatre.

SPYWAREBLASTER, does not remove anything from the computer, but it simply creates a list of blocked sites, so even if you type in the web address, it will not take you to the site.

the third software which comes in handy is

FORTICLIENT v 3

this has a firewall and antivirus, and antispam, and is free to use for 3 months, a very nice tool to have, you can get FortiClient from download.com without going into the hassle of registering.

I hope this helps, it sure did help me.

no tool can do anything, until you yourself are cautious.

coz all the computer does is what you tell it to do

it does not do what you want it to do.

Can my computer support windows vista home edition?

My computer is Acer Veriton 5200, running windows xp pro.. And my system is 1.7ghz, 512mb of ram (gonna add in a 1gb ram soon) video is NVIDIA TNT2 M64 32MB, and a 40gb hard disk and a 20gb hard disk...

Can my computer support windows vista home edition?microsoft money

There are no features in Vista that you need so there's no point in upgrading to Vista!

But in general It will run slow on your computer, mostly because of your graphic card.

Can my computer support windows vista home edition?windows explorer internet explorer

I don't think it would be a good idea. Yes, Vista will probably run on that system, but you will need to upgrade more than your ram to really have a fluid, enjoyable experience. My recommendation would be to wait to go Vista until you get your next system anyway.

Main weaknesses are single core processor and vid card, especially if you go Vista Home Premium. By the time you spend the money to get those upgrades, you're halfway to a new system already, assuming the Acer will even take upgrades. a lot of factory-built pc's are very picky about what you can put in them.
i dont thinke so
Do not spend on upgrading this computer because although it might run the vista, it definately be experiencing system crash from time to time. To run vista you require a better computer because it will not depend on the RAM or Video RAM upgrade. The motherboard chip sets will also matter. So why dont you dispose this old computer and buy a new branded machine to enjoy the benefits of the vista.

For better use of vista buy a computer that is atleast 3GHz processor speed, 512MB RAM.
Why don't you go to the Micro$oft site and have them check your system for compatibility for Vista ??

--%26gt; http://www.microsoft.com/windows/product...

This test will tell you if your system can run Vista

Sarge
Whats wrong with your windows xp pro?

Vista will slow down your computer i think.

There is nothing extraordinary in vista that you need to upgrade anyway.

Stick with xp.

How can i reinstall windows?

I disabled my administrator account by mistake on my PC,, now I am running it with the guest account and it will not allow me to install or uninstall any thing.

I would like to format the entire PC and reinstall windows XP Pro, I have the genuine cd but I need something to start the PC on safe mode or something because when I insert the cd and restart the computer it ignores it and reboots normally, what do I need and where can I get it.

Please help

How can i reinstall windows?microsoft windows

if u created this administrator account(which has been disabled) manually then i've a quick solution...

press restart and keep pressing "F8" button.......a black screen with white text will be appeared....

start computer in safe mode

now log in to the administrator account which was created automatically at the time of installation......(generally user name is "admin" or "administrator")

and create another admin account to easily access.....

if not

then restart computer and keep pressing "del" or "F3" (it varries)until the bios screen opened.....now go to "boot" tab by key board arrow keys...now set the cd rom as highest priority......

if u specify the motherboard company then one can give u more details on bios settings...

now insert ur windows xp pro cd into cd rom and save settings of bios and exit....

is ur win xp set up running now ?....

How can i reinstall windows?windows media player 10 internet explorer

You will need to set your BIOS to boot from the CD. If you put up the make of your computer, I could help you further.
Enter the BIOS(usually F1 or del at boot...just keep pressing it) and change your boot order so that the CD-rom is higher than the hard disk. Or just make the CD-rom the first boot item. Place the CD in and reboot. It should say "Press any key to boot from CD". You will then be able to format the drive and reinstall Windows.
When you start your computer press f1 or f2 and go into the setting it depends on your computer some computers use f1 some f2 some other.when you go into the setting go were it says start up and make first start up from the CD not from the hard drive then save and exit.now if you insert the installation disk in the CD drive and start computer the computer goes first to the CD drive to boot up, if there is no CD in the drive then it will go to c: drive to boot up.this way you can boot up from the CD and install windows.but wait before you do all of that go to start control panel then user account then create a new account then after you create a new account go again and chose change account and make it as administrator. you solved the problem this way without formatting.
you need a brain and it's too late to get one.

How to stop auto restart in windows?

So I left my computer downloading torrents last night and guess what, it restarted itself because of a recent update. How to I disable this? Its annoying when I leave things running and this happens.

I am running windows xp pro

How to stop auto restart in windows?microsoft project

Open the Control Panel. Open Administrative Tools. Open Services. Right click on Automatic Updates in the panel, and select properties. Select Startup Type: Disabled

How to stop auto restart in windows?microsoft powerpoint internet explorer

start%26gt;settings%26gt;control panel

then switch to Classic view

click on automatic updates %26gt; select Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them
After any update, a prompt message to restart will pop up if necessary. This is a default function in XP and you will have like 30 seconds to cancel it or it will proceed.

There is no setting in control panel to stop that. If you DISABLE the automatic update, you simply won't get any update and you will have to update manually.

There is a way though, to delay automatic restart after an automatic update. You need to follow clearly the instruction given. Go to http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archive...

Hope it work for you and DON'T mess up with your computer. STOP everything if you don't know what you're doing :)

How much RAM does windows vista ultimate use with no programs open?

compared to windows xp pro how much ram does vista ultimate use

How much RAM does windows vista ultimate use with no programs open?microsoft updates

In my conservative estimation about a half a gig.

How much RAM does windows vista ultimate use with no programs open?windows server 2003 internet explorer

My system has 2 gigs, and it used 550 megs. Vista reserves a certain amount even if its not using it, so it looks like it's being used.
If you have a 512MB RAM, then its going to take about 40-60 percent of your memory.
bout 600mb (with all aero enabled)
This can be dependent upon how many programs you have running in the background and what options are enabled in Vista. You can generally count on about 350-500 MB of ram being used if it's available to the system. Keep in mind that Windows uses more virtual memory than system memory depending on how much RAM is available to it at the time.

I was thinking of changing my Vista to XP on my Dell Laptop, professionally done.. should I do this?

Mostly for gaming, I dont like vistas performace as well as I did with my computer downstairs which is Windows XP Pro

I was thinking of changing my Vista to XP on my Dell Laptop, professionally done.. should I do this?microsoft vista

That's probably a good move from a performance standpoint, but before you do it, be POSITIVE, that the laptop manufacturer provides XP drivers for all of your hardware.

I was thinking of changing my Vista to XP on my Dell Laptop, professionally done.. should I do this?windows xp pro internet explorer

in order for vista to run smoothly, you'll need at least 2GB of memory. if not, downgrade to xp
Well, you will get about a 10% performance boost.. thats undeniable

Also, everyone on Yahoo is very Biased towards XP and tell you its the best thing you will ever do..

HOWEVER- You miss out on the ability to use DX10(which will be a very noticable thing when Nvidia launches their new series cards in the next few months)

Also, Vista has lost mainly of its original bugs causing it to run slowly... the driver issues have also been cleared up - Vista in itself is basically "future proofing" yourself

But, if you only want to game, XP for now is probably your best bet performance wise! Cant argue with that :P
I would change to XPP in a heartbeat vista is still to buggy .
No directx 10 on XP. But I don't really like vista so I definitely would change it. Just have to make sure all the drivers support XP as well.
Sadly, Yes. This is the first time that Microsoft is actually suggesting that some people go "backwards" by using the previous version of OS software. Or at least this was what I was told by a programmer friend working for the company. He and almost all his associates will not be running the Vista platform, since it is still too under-supported by most of the hardware manufacturers, causing misc. problems with your system. Dell isn't nearly as bad as some other Laptop manufacturers, like Sony. so the change will be far superior and you will be happy to have done it.
Yes , Vista is junk OS
If you pull down the drivers (XP) for your hard drive controller and network drivers first, just do it yourself. It doesn't have to be "professionally" done. All we do is the same thing you would do yourself. Shove in the XP CD, when it comes to the "Press F6 to install SCSI..etc", have your hard drive controller drivers ready and then....lots of waiting and next, next, next....

Personally, I've run both XP and Vista and I'll stick with Vista. Even with Vista Ultimate 64bit, I still don't notice much difference between the two. Having a dedicated flash drive for Speedboost helps...That, and turning off the UAC (MSConfig, Tools tab, disable UAC)

It's funny what people's opinions on an operating system are after hearing things through the rumor mill. I was part of the original beta program of Vista and currently have three systems running it quite smoothly and have many very happy Vista clients. Heck, the Vista install has been the smoothest I've ever had for an operating system and I've been in the industry since DOS 3.3 was considered a major upgrade.
for now, xp is a better operating system choice for gaming

at least until vista's service packs are released and the os has been out for awhile

I've changed my Windows task bar!?

Hi probably really simple to most people but I've accidently clicked on something and now the task bar thing at the top of the screen (on windows xp pro) has changed format from the classic, address bar on the left look, to one where it's in the middle. Right click the taskbar uncheck "Lock the Taskbar" and move it back to where you want it. Just recheck that box so it doesn't get moved again.

right click on task bar, the part that doesn't have anything on it and uncheck lock task bar and then drag and drop where ever you want it.
read up on scanning your computer it made this misstake for a reason .
U can simply click on the task bar and drag it where u want it to move. Regarding the classic menu and the start menu u can right click on ur task bar then go to properties then go to start menu .Here u can select the classic or start menu.

Make it sure that you recieved a driver CD for your desktop. Get Windows Xp Pro and insert it into CD drive, then boot the computer from CD Drive and install Windows Xp. It'll remove Vista and if your had disk drive have restore partition, you gotta be careful not to delete that (you may need it in future if you wanna upgrade to Vista). After installing Xp install drivers and then the programs that you may need like antivirus office etc.

Good luck!
could be the program to try. but you may run into an audio problem .

the computer might not support windows xp audio some do and some dont

iam not an expert on it but i do know that some windows

vista computers dont support xp
The first thing to do is find XP drivers for every single piece of hardware in the computer and burn them to disc. This is critical. If you don't do this you may end up with a brand new paperweight. XP is 8 years old and doesn't have built in drivers for a lot of hardware, so you need to gather them yourself.

Next, purchase a copy of XP. Make sure it's the full version, not an upgrade. It will cost around $150 or so.

Once you have the new OS, insert the disc in the drive and reboot your machine. You will need to format your hard drive, which will completely destroy all data on it. This is the point of no return. If you don't have, for example, XP drivers for your hard drive controller, XP will insist that you don't have a hard drive and it cannot install. You'll have to pay someone a few hundred dollars to fix it if this happens. Keep in mind that you will also lose all applications that came installed on the PC. But once you've formatted the drive, follow the instructions on screen to install XP. It's easy, assuming you have drivers and the hardware is supported.

If you remove the C-Moss battery (the watch battery) from inside the computer and keep it out for about 5 mins it should do away with all the set passwords.

Internet explorer freezes in conjunction with Windows Live Messenger?

I'm experiencing random stalls when using ineternet explorer. They seem to occur in conjunction with Windows Live Messenger (the new style MSN), although they dont seem to occur just when signed in, but at all times, even when im not signed in.

The only cure i've found (other than waiting several minutes for a single page to load) is to:

Close concerned internet explorer page,

sign in or out of messenger, or start/close the program in the first place,

reopen internet explorer, and the problem appears to have been solved (until it re-occurs every half hour or so)

My question is then: Is this a common problem? and has anyone found a fix for it?

If its any help to answering:

I run Windows XP pro, on a modern packard bell, with a 2meg. NTL broadband connection. It's all virus/malware free. I'm not using the brand new version of messenger due to validation problems with downloading it.

Thanks in advance

My Notebook is stuck at the Windows loading screen with the blue loading bar and doesn't load any after that.windows media player 10

My guess is that you have a component that is not compatible with SR2. Notebooks are tough because you usually can't just take components out. However:

First boot to safe mode, I'm pretty sure it will boot to there. Control Panel, system, hardware, device manager.

Unistall your LAN, sound, modem, wireless, everything except your video and change that to generic. Reboot. SR2 will reload all of the unistalled drivers with updated ones. You may have to load some of them if Windows doesn't have them but see if the system will boot and load some of them. If so then just load the latest and greatest that you download from the web. If this doesn't work:

Boot your Notebook and get into the BIOS, f2, del or sometimes esc works if you hit it just after your keyboard initializes.

Once in the BIOS, disable your on-board, LAN, Sound card, modem and any thing else that is not essential to the boot process. Leave your on-board video alone cause you need that.

Reboot and see if it loads. If it does then start enabling your perephrials one at a time until you hit the one that stops it. You may not be able to use it or you may have to back up to SR1 and make sure that you have up to date drivers before you load SR2.

I'm thinking though, at this point, you have an incompatible piece of hardware. If it won't boot after disabling in everthing but the video then you may have a bad onboard video and you need a new MB.

Good luck

I'm not sure how the windows files are stored on your PC. However, you can download an image of a Windows XP Pro disc and burn that to a new CD using a program like Nero or MagicISO. In order to find an image of Windows XP Pro you will most likely be successful using a torrent and download it with such a program as uTorrent.

- http://thepiratebay.com - Search for Windows XP Pro

Note: You can legally download the image since you own a copy of Windows XP Pro, just use your original product key.

Good luck.

Can I burn a copy of Windows from the files that are on my pc already, instead of using a disc???windows xp sp2 internet explorer

No, you have to have a bootable disk, and if by copying the files off an already working machine you don't get the setup files either. Sorry.
no ...you wont have the installers...go to the local flea and see if a hobbyist will make one for you.
Also, depending on how deep the scratches are, you can get a good CD buffer from an electronics/CD store and buffer the scratches out.
No, you can't create a windows install from the machine.

You should find a video-game store that has a CD buffer and have them buff out your CD's scratches.

Would you recommend Vista or XP in my situation? Why?

I have the oppurtunity to upgrade from my OS, Windows XP Pro.

My computer is a Dell Dimension E521 has a 2GhZ AMD Anthlon 64+, 2GB DDR2 RAM, 256MB graphics card (128mb of that swiped from my ram)

So, which should i choose? I really like the looks of Vista, and i figured since Microsoft will be cutting support off in 2011 i might as well upgrade now while my computer is brand new :]

IF YOU HAVE VISTA WHAT DO YOU THINK??

thanks!

Would you recommend Vista or XP in my situation? Why?microsoft live

wait a little longer. i have a copy of ultimate myself, but i am waiting until they get rid of the bugs. there are so many programs and peripherals not compatible yet with vista that is deterring myself from upgrading. i just read that too many poeple have problems with th os. if you really want to test vista, try dual booting your system so that you can use both until you feel confident with vista.

Would you recommend Vista or XP in my situation? Why?microsoft internet explorer internet explorer

Oh boy, you have the machine I used to have and I hate E521 so much. I had so many issues, one being the front cover making a buzzing noise and all - anyway, Vista isn't that much of a benefit and it often annoys me but it is pretty good. You have a good processor so the Vista will run perfectly fine on it.
You can run Vista on that machien with very few hiccups.

If your video card supports DirectX 10, there isn't a single reason not to switch to Vista. But if its DX9, then Id say stick with XP Pro and wait to buy a DX10 card later on then switch to Vista.
I've had Vista for about 3 or so months and it runs fine. If you have the oppertunity to upgrade, go for it!
All the people i speak to say leave Vista alone to many bugs at present. Service pack 1 will not be released till end of year. XP pro is more stable i have found. My rule of thumb is when some thing new comes out don't touch it for 12 to 18 months after its release date. You can always update to Vista at a later date.

How to Configure Windows to Automatically Shut Down?

I cannot convince the people at my mom's office to turn off the computers at night (were trying to conserve energy). Is there anyway to make Windows Xp Pro. shut down automatically, I tried going to scheduled tasks and figuring out a way to turn off at a certain time but I cant get it to work. Also my mom does not want them to turn off after a certain amount of time (i.e. after 30 mins of non-use it turns off), she just wants them to completely shut down at a certain time like 11pm.

I found Lifehacker's tutorial on how to reinstall Windows XP to be the most comprehensive and comprehensible. You can find the article at:

"Geek to Live: How to format your hard drive and install Windows XP from scratch" -- written by Gina Trapani (http://www.lifehacker.com/software/top/g...

Hey, Windows XP users: The blue screen of death got you down? Missing dll errors making you frown? Frequent software crashes leave you yearning for that fresh, new PC you unpacked with glee three years ago? If you've scrubbed for spyware and viruses, defragged, chkdsked and done the requisite rain dance but things are STILL wonky on your computer, it may be time for extreme action.

Today we're going to go over how to format your hard drive and reinstall Windows XP from scratch to get back that shiny new operating system feeling untainted by years of wear, tear and added and removed programs.

Note for the tremulous: I cannot tell a lie; reinstalling an operating system is NOT a trivial task. There are several junctures where lots of things can go wrong that can affect the way your PC functions FOREVER. Further, this isn't a task one can complete in just a few hours. There are lots of ways to fix PC problems before reinstalling Windows, a fresh install should be an absolute last resort. It took me three years - one which involved installing and uninstalling programs almost daily - to get to the point of reinstalling Windows. You have been warned.

Still with me? Good.

What you'll need:

1. A Windows XP machine in dire need of a fresh start

(Without any crucial, un-backedup data on it)

2. A Windows XP installation CD with a valid Product Key

(Preferably the disc that shipped with the computer originally, in which case the Product Key won't be obviously listed)

3. The CDs and serial numbers of all the software you need to install on your fresh "new" machine

4. Hardware driver discs that shipped with the PC and any components you added on

(Optional, but VERY strongly recommended)

5. Another 'net-connected computer of any OS persuasion with a CD burner, thumb drive, or other removable disk

(Optional, but strongly recommended, for looking up stuff and downloading drivers in case of emergency)

6. One full day to get your PC fully functioning again.

Got all that? Good.

Let's get started. ...[more].
These people are full of it. If you have the original CD, just pop it in and reinstall. It will keep all your old settings and programs. If you're using a borrowed CD, just make sure it's the same version and service pack you have and use your original key code that should be on your computer somewhere.

How do I enable the "lock screen" feature in XP.?

My Windows XP pro system does nto have the lock screen feature. How do I enable it so i can lock my screen from the start menu or from a ctrl+alt+del?

How do I enable the "lock screen" feature in XP.?microsoft templates

You can press the windows key + L

If you want it to automatically lock after a certain amoutn of time you'll need to use a third party program or script to do that. Next best thing you could do is password protect a screen saver.

How do I enable the "lock screen" feature in XP.?windows firewall internet explorer

Try the Window Key + L at the same time.
There are several ways to lock your Windows XP computer, but all of them use the same command line. The method you choose is a matter of personal preference.

via the keyboard

The easiest way to lock Windows XP is by simply pressing the Windows logo key and the letter L (for Lock) on a Microsoft Natural Keyboard or any other compatible keyboard that includes the Window key. Doing so will pop up the Unlock Computer Password box.

via a Shortcut.

If you don't have a keyboard with a Window key or simply don't like the keyboard method, then here's how you can make a desktop shortcut to lock your computer.

Right click an empty area of your desktop, choose New/Shortcut and enter this line as the command line:

rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation

Click Next. Name the shortcut whatever you prefer and click Finish. That's it.

If you'd like to change the icon, just right click the shortcut and go to Properties/Shortcut/Change Icon.

via the command line

The above command line can also be used at a DOS prompt to lock your computer. One simple way you can do it would be by clicking Start/Run, typing CMD and then entering the command and pressing Enter.

via a bat file

This is similar to a Windows shortcut method. But it's a DOS version. If you've never created a bat (batch) file, but would like to try this method, simply open a new text file (such as with Notepad) and type the following commands:

@echo off

rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation

cls

Save the file with a .bat extension, such as Lock.bat, and you're done. Double click to make the file run.

Those are the basic methods to lock XP, but there are some other relating factors of which you should be aware.

Password

It should go without saying that if you don't use a password to log on to your computer, then anyone can access your computer and unlock it. If you want to use the lock feature, then set a password by going to User Accounts in the Control Panel and then click Create Password.

Fast User Switching

Fast User Switching allows multiple login sessions at the same time. Whether you have this feature enabled or disabled will make a big difference in how your locked computer can be accessed and on the behavior of your shortcuts when executed.

If enabled, executing any of the above locking methods will bring up the Welcome screen and other users will be able to log on to the computer, as is the norm for Fast User Switching. So, you really don't get much security at all this way, if your intention is to lock your machine. With Fast User Switching, only your profile is locked, not the ability for other users to log into your system. Any other user can just log on to your computer and use it.

If Fast User Switching is disabled, you will have to enter a password to unlock the computer. Double clicking your shortcut will bring up the Unlock Computer password dialog box. This is the same lock method that Windows NT and 2000 uses.

If you're not sure whether or not you have Fast User Switching enabled or disabled, go to User Accounts in the Control Panel and click the Change the way users log on or off tab. There you will see your status for Fast User Switching.

Welcome Screen

Whether the Welcome screen is enabled or disabled also has an effect on the way your computer can be locked.

If the Welcome screen is enabled, you can also lock your computer in Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) by clicking the Lock Computer option in the Shutdown menu list. This option will only appear if the Welcome screen is enabled鈥攚ithout Fast User Switching being enabled.

Note! In order to use Fast User Switching, the Welcome screen must be enabled. You cannot select Fast User Switching if the Welcome screen option is unchecked.

If the Welcome screen is disabled, you can lock the computer by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete and then clicking the Lock Computer tab in the Windows Security dialog box that comes up.
The windows key + L shortcut works really nicely.
You can only lock the screen if you have a password set on your user account. Otherwise your best bet is to set a password protected screen saver. However, that will always require the wait to get there.
you can press windows Key + L to lock screen.. also in control pannel %26gt; user accounts %26gt; check the option change the way user log on/off

Did you buy the PC with XP already installed? If so then you'd probably have OEM - the easiest thing to do is look on the bottom of the PC and see if there is a label that reads "Windows XP Professional OEM" anywhere, with some numbers on it. If you have that label, that's your certificate of authenticity, which means it was pre-installed with an OEM version.

If you don't have that, then you probably had a retail version which had a box and disks.

Hope this helps!

Is it recommended to install Windows Vista on a home PC? What will I gain?microsoft flight simulator internet explorer

Windows Vista (from what I've heard and seen) is mostly all eye candy (not a whole lot to gain) and without decent hard ware it will be VERY slow on your computer (yes, even the internet explorer part of it). If your computer doesn't have at least 1 GB of RAM and a decent processor (dual core would be best), then I would not recommend doing this.
You can get answers from www.microsoft.com/vista. From Microsft's perspecitve it's recommended. From an IT perspective it's recommended that you wait to see how the industry accepts it. Normally 6 months.
There are four main things. One is that Vista will be more hacker resistant. Supposedly it will be faster to load than Windows XP. Third is that it's going to come with direct X 10 allowing computer programmers to create more realistic images (direct X might come out for Windows XP). Fourth I think that Vista will work with 64 bit processing. Vista should run on the latest computers.
This may help to answer your questions, just click on it and go through it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vis...
This may depend on what type of PC you have. If you have an older, slower PC, you may not get the gains from Vista that others will get. One of the major drivers for home users will be the new transparent interface (it just looks cool), but if you are not running a fast enough system, you won't be able to use the transparent interface anyway, so no cool stuff for you. The other benefits were outlined below. I agree with the admin's recommendation to wait a few months to see how the industry reacts before deciding to go forward or not. If a lot of software is built which makes use of the ability to use the 64bit architecture, then maybe then it makes sense to upgrade your PC and your OS. In that case, you could save the cash of spending money on two OSs (the installed one and the upgrade) by buying the PC with Vista pre-installed. I have a feeling that most users who upgrade older PCs won't be so happy with the upgrade. Another benefit was that IE7 would be pre-installed, but you can get IE7 now by downloading it from Micro$oft.

You're serious?

XP take a minimum of 3-4 gigs.
Unlikely you could do this even if there were enough space as it would be the same as trying to install it on a external hard drive.
I recommend finding a bigger flashdrive. Biggest flashdrive I know of is about 5-10 GB. I'd get one of those if you're serious about this.
You have no chance of doing that,,,, where you going to put the virtual memory needed by windows?

If you're talking about true remote connections, all with their own sessions, you only have one choice with 2003. You have to use terminal services, and purchase a license for each terminal service device. So, you'll have to light up terminal services, and pay Microsoft for the privilege....

I want 5 users to connect remotely to a windows 2003 server standard to use an application on the server?default browser internet explorer

You will have to create user accounts on the users local machines and then on the server share out the program. You will have to give the users access on the server so make sure that you set that up under the program properties. Depending on the application you might only have one person at a time to be able to use the app. also, on the user machines you will have to join them to the domain that you create off the server. www.microsoft.com has a couple good explanations. terminal services is fine and all, but why use that when you can run kerberos off the server and have better connection times.

here is a couple docs for you:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/itsolut...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.asp...
If you are going to have 5 concurrent users the only way is with Terminal Services, and you have to buy the CAL's before you can put it into application mode.

Can you transfer a copy of windows to another had drive?

I have a copy of Windows XP Pro on one hard drive (80 GB IDE) and I would like to transfer it to another hard drive that is faster (500 GB SATA). Is it just as simple as moving all the files (including hidden system files) to this other hard drive? I know how to change primary boot device so I can get it to search that disc first to boot (using GParted LiveCD).

Can you transfer a copy of windows to another had drive?windows 98

No, you can't just copy over BUT.... you can clone onto a larger drive... Olde ~Worlde way is to use Norton Ghost but there's lost of software out there to do it! This is only "easy" if it's only the drive you are changing as the XP boot may fail due to hardware changes - BTW, we clone drives all the time at a corporate level (using hardware copiers) to get round the long winded setup process.

Can you transfer a copy of windows to another had drive?microsoft support internet explorer

To do this you must "image" your old drive onto your new drive. To do this you will need an imaging program such as Norton Ghost.

You can not simply copy the data from one drive to another if either of these drives is under Windows control, ie, if it's running. the OS.

An imaging program runs the drives outside of Windows and can simply transfer all data from one drive to another.
You will most likely run into problems with this method for a bunch of reasons. The drivers for the Hard Drive would be different, and System Files won;t get copied over if the disk is "busy". What you can do is either borrow a Win XP disk from someone and use your license key. This is legal since you are only using the Operating System Once. You can also call your Computer Manufacturer and request the CDs that came with the computer - Dell for example, will send them to you for free and it already has the Operating System and all the Drivers. You could even call Microsoft for the CD - they are actually very helpful in situations like this.

So the short answer is - you are ALWAYS better off doing a fresh install of Windows Operating System. In fact, its a smart idea to do on computers every few years anyway - a lot of garbage ends up on the computer after a while which effects everything. Hope this helps.

-Matt

You can remove the hard drive and stick it in another PC and copy the files off. Make sure you set the pin in the back to 'slave' if necessary and check the BIOS of the machine your putting the drive into to make sure that slot is enabled.

Computer messed up...How to get files off and put onto another without using WIndows???windows registry internet explorer

yeah this is a kinda tricky situation but here goes you will need two hard drives for this lets call the hard drive that has the data on it HD1 and the other one HD2 first take HD1 out of your computer completely and then place HD2 in their(on HD2 you will need to either have windows intstalled on it already or get it installed) now boot up your computer once everthing is up, shut down your computer and completely unhook your power to it

(so you dont get eletricuted) and then open up the computer and put HD1 as a driver that is the SLAVE driver to HD2 (intead of having just HD1 hooked up, now its going to be a secondary hard drive, well pretty much) after everything is hooked up then plug in your computer and boot it up, once its done booting go into My Comptuer and double click on the drive that is HD1 or just right click on it and hit copy, then go to HD2 and right click it and just hit paste(mind you that this can take anywhere between a couple minutes and a couple hours depending on much is on that HD1. well if that dont solve your problems(despite it being quiet confusing) then just take your computer to the nearest CompUSA or Office Depot and they will fix it for a fee of course) hope all goes well

what does this have to do with Acuras ???
It's not so much a matter of the operating system as what program the spreadsheet needs to be usable. If it was created in Excel 97 and you're upgrading to XP Pro with Office 2003, Office, XP, or Office 2000, then there shouldn't be any problems at all. Better yet if you're using the same program in Windows 98 and Windows XP, then there should be no difference at all.

Now, if you install Windows XP as an upgrade, I don't think it will format your drive or cause you to lose any data. But if you format the drive when you install XP, then you'll lose everything. Best to back up any files you want to keep before you do the upgrade (I find emailing small files to yourself works really well).

I have a dell pc i have 128mb ram running xp pentium 3 some web pages will not load up quick whats the problemmicrosoft flight simulator

Some web-sites use Java and Flash, which takes a long time to load. My computer, Athlon 4900+ processor, 2 GB's of RAM and a T3 internet connection even has some problems with loading a page. :)

I have a dell pc i have 128mb ram running xp pentium 3 some web pages will not load up quick whats the problemwindows 2000 internet explorer

Your running the computer on the minimum amount of ram. Upgrade the ram.
are you using a dial up system with modem???
If it is only some pages that the problem is occuring with, it could very well be the pages itself. They might be requiring java/flash which you may not have or which might be taking time to load. In general you can increase the speed of internet by clearing the browser cache (For IE) :

Tools -%26gt; Internet Options -%26gt; Delete cookies, delete files and clear history.
Well there can only be one thing. Not enough real memory.

For a processor running XP 256mg should be the minimum.

As long as you run programs that fit the 128 you would have no problem but there are some web sites that have a lot going on and take more memory.

Most computers have the capability to upgrade memory.

If you do this try to see if your computer will handle 512mg.

You should have no more problems then.
you need to add more MBs.
Some webpages...? try refreshing them...

Can i run a 32 bit copy of windows on the AMD athlon 64 x2 5000+?windows themes internet explorer

There will be a bit of a performance loss, but not much. I run XP Pro x86 (32bit) on my Athlon 6000 and have no problems.
Nubebot is right. 32 bit XP will run just fine with no performance loss at all.
that's what i have and what i'm running. the processor is not that good at multitasking, so beware if you do alot of that.
Yes, I have been running XP on computers since the old Athlon + days (single core)....I have built many computers since that time all the way up to the Athlon Dual Core 6400 which I am now using with no problems. So anything built since the year 2000 will probably run Windows XP Professional or Home.
You won't experiece any problems in fact it will be a tad loss on performance but theyre still aren't that many 64 bit applications yet anyway. Go 32 bit.

I need specs for a Windows Terminal Server for Quickbooks E7?

A company I used to work for asked me to upgrade their network and I'd like to get some input from someone who has a similar setup or has installed one.

Since upgrading to Quickbooks Enterprise 7.0, their company file has doubled in size (now 1.5GB), and everything is running a lot slower than it didd with version 5. We had to upgrade to 7 because they had reached the limit in item numbers, which is supposed to be eliminated in version 7.

So now we've decided to get a new server and use terminal services on all the clients. We currently have about 9 clients running Windows XP Pro, which we plan to retire and go to thin clients eventually to make the network easier to manage.

The new server will host the quickbooks company file (duh) and the clients will connect to it using terminal services. With ten clients, I imagine it takes a lot of RAM to do this.

Any help in the brand of computers, specs getting all of this to work would be greatly appreciated.

It is a risky move, speed trading off security, so before trying it try the following first, defragment drive and Click my computer and right click on c drive, properties, general tab, disk cleanup button, check all those boxes with amounts on the right then ok.

I've heard that the Windows Recycle Bin does not permanently remove files. How do I find and delete them?default browser

You have to perform a "secure delete" to remove information permanently. This is the only real way to erase information off of magnetic media. This works by encrypting the data and deleting it many times over until its nothing more than unreadable code. Shredding is another technique but not nearly as effective. Also. The US Dept of Defense endorse "secure delete" as the only way to permanently remove data. Check out this link. A third party deletion software will cost you about $25 but make sure its endorsed with the US DoD santization procedures. I installed Evidence Eraser on many computers at a patent company. Its the industry leader Here is a link

I've heard that the Windows Recycle Bin does not permanently remove files. How do I find and delete them?microsoft word download internet explorer

This is not a computer hardware question. Ask in the software section.
Says who?.
Try searching for the files and deleting by yourself.Either go to control panel or left click on start.
Actually, it's possible and very easy to recover. When you delete a file "Permanently", the hard drive only erase the index to the file, making the file "corrupted". There is a free recovery utility called Undelete Plus, and it can find some of the deleted files. But i cannot guarantee that the file will be perfect, because the deleted file have a different condition depending on how long it has been on the hard drive, how it was deleted and etc. If you wish to delete your files unrecoverable, wipe the empty disk space. Don't ask me how, because no one has done it successfully without corrupting other files, but i do know how to recover files :D
click start and go to my control panel--click on add or remove-----look for the name of the file there and click remove-----

that clears it off the computer-----not in recycle
right click recycle bin

select properties

select not to have files deleted to be sent to R.B.

also recover 13% of hard drive R.B. is using by sliding to 0%

also stop delete confirmation notice from displaying on same page
When you delete a file in windows, it goes to the recycle bin, unless you have that turned off. When you empty the recycle bin the following occurs:

The OS goes to the file allocation table or the NTFS file table and removes the entry for the file. The first letter of the file name is removed from the file. The file is not overwritten until the space is required for a new file. This frees the drive space to be written to and marks the space as availabe. It does not prevent that file from being recovered if you have the correct tools to perform the recovery with.

To trully remove the file from your drive entirely:

1. Open a Command Shell, DOS window, whatever you want to call it.

You can do this by clicking on start then click on run then type in command.com and press enter.

2. Type in cipher /w:C:\directory\where\thefile\was

3. Then press "enter" and let it do it's thing.

You can do this for entire drives too but it will take several hours on a 250G drive.

What does this do?

It wipes all of the free space in the directory by first writing 0s then writing 1s, then writing a random Hex number over all the blocks of free space in the selected directory. This will totally and permanently remove any and all traces of the deleted file(s) in the selected directory.

It may be too late for this time, but will suggest you get Acronis True Image for the future. Install Acronis, take image backup of your system on a pre-defined regular basis. Any time you run into trouble, you can revert back to pre-error status without the hassle of having to re-install MS Windows and other programs.

You can backup your DATA files, but you surely will need to re-install all other programs after re-formatting your hard disk. Good luck.

Go to Start %26gt; Run %26gt; and type MSCONFIG and Enter - go to Start Up Tab and delete them in there. Apply and OK and you're done!

PS The programs in there are usually all "deletable" (deletes the start up not the programs themselves) without problems - the ones needed to run Windows are not listed so you can disable the lot without causing any ill effects.
Run "msconfig"
Go to start-run(on the bottom right side)-type in msconfig-go to the start up tab, and uncheck what you want to not run on start up.

Go to Gateways site and download your drivers for every thing, and you will be back in business.
You need to load the mother board drivers. They should be on a disk that came with the machine. If you don't have the disk, go th Gateway's web site. Under Support, do a search for you computer model and download the drivers.

You will also need to load the drivers for any add-on cards that you might have installed.

You can boot from a USB device as well as install Windows XP and be able to boot from it.

However, it's actually a question if your motherboard supports booting to a USB device in the first place. If your motherboard support booting from a USB device, then it will work, if the motherboard doesn't , then you can't.

Ok i have repaired a laptop and i have to re-install windows is it illegal to use the same key for it?internet explorer 6 internet explorer

hmmm

was this the same key programmed into the repaired laptop before it broke?
Use the same key that was previously on it and you will be fine.
I think it's protocol to use a key, then get to internet to activate, but I'm not sure. If you have difficulty, they give you a number to call and explain, and MS is reasonable about listening to your reason for re-install and giving you a code %26lt;/run-on sentence%26gt;
no
Your key is licensed to your laptop, so you are supposed to use it whenever you install on that system.

Borrowing a disc is fine as long as it it the same Windows XP (Home or Pro, retail or OEM, upgrade or full).

If you changed enough hardware in repairing your laptop you might have to activate over the phone. No big deal.

How to set up a website using a static IP address, linksys router, and windows server 2000?

I can connect to a data polling computer through the router using Windows XP's remote desktop connection. I can connect to the router remotely. I can poll the datalogger remotely. I can create .asp files locally. I can connect locally to the server using Frontpage 2003. I have setup the router to direct port 80 to the server. I've been trying to do all that is suggested in various net searches. If someone can recommend a book, I will appreciate it. The linksys router has four ports. One port is used by the polling computer ruunning Windows XP Pro. The second is used by the datalogger. The third port is used by a Dell server.

How to set up a website using a static IP address, linksys router, and windows server 2000?download windows xp

you will need to login to the linksys and setup the web server as

a host in the DMZ and allow inbound port 80 traffic to it.

ANY TIME you allow inbound access to a system, you take the risk it CAN be compromised.

If you want ppl to find it by name, and not just by IP addr, you will need to setup dynamic DNS.

How to set up a website using a static IP address, linksys router, and windows server 2000?ies internet explorer

I'm not completely clear on your question, but I'll take a guess here.

Your router has a WAN port. This connects to the internet. The other ports on the router are LAN ports. This means that the Router has the public IP of the server.

First question: do you have a static Internet IP (one that never changes?) If not, people will have a hard time finding your server, because that process is typically done with DNS servers, that map a domain name to one or more servers in your domain. There are some dynamic IP services that willl deal with your not having a static internet IP, but these are far from ideal.

Assuming that is the case, the computers on your LAN are on a non-routable IP network, typically 192.168.0. So the first thing you need to make sure of is what network that is. Then you need to make sure that any servers you have use static IP's on the 192.168.0 network. The router (default gateway) will probably be 192.168.0.1. So your www server could be 192.168.0.2.

You do not want to have the router allocate IP's via DHCP in theis scenario, although if you want that, you need to go into the router and tell it to give out IP's starting at a range above the range of your static IP machines (192.168.50+) for example.

Now that you know you have your www server at 192.168.0.2, you should be able to open a browser on another machine on the lan and get a webpage from it using http://192.168.0.2 as the address. If that works, you're ready for the final step. If that doesn't work, you need to figure out why the IIS server isn't publishing. Make sure that you don't have a firewall blocking port 80 outbound, and check IIS in general.

If it's working on the local LAN, the last piece of the puzzle is to set IP Port forwarding for Port 80 to 192.168.0.2.

This will tell the router to send all traffic that is sent to it on Port 80 (the www well known port) and forward that to your www server.

When that works people outside who know your *real* IP will be able to connect to your server. As I mentioned, setting up DNS is also part of the equation, if you ever plan to have people use www.yourdomain.com

Keep in mind that testing this from your NAT firewall is difficult. You need a machine outside your network that you can use to try to connect back in. Testing on your local lan will typically not work because the NAT router will not let you connect out and back to itself. People that set these things up have servers they can use to test. If you don't you may need a friend to test for you.

Is it right to upgrade to windows vista beta version right now?

i've a 2.99Ghz pc with 1 GB ram and a 128 mb video card and windows xp pro.

Is it right to upgrade to windows vista beta version right now?microsoft word download

Two rules for new operating systems:

1. Never, ever, ever use a "beta" version. Beta versions still contain all kinds of things that don't work now and will never work later, but Microsoft can't be bothered fixing them because they want to find out if anyone notices first.

2. Never, ever use the first version. First versions still contain bugs that may or may not get fixed.

Stick to an operating system version that has been in use for at least two years -- at least you'll know in advance what the problems are, instead of finding them yourself.

Is it right to upgrade to windows vista beta version right now?internet explorer download internet explorer

What do you want it for? Remember it's only a beta and it will still have (more) bugs than the final version.

Plus, some of your apps will not work, so think it through, I wouldn't.
it's never right to install a copy of vista you downloaded off the internet - it's called theft and software piracy.

in technical details, i would never advise 'upgrades' of operating systems, it's normally better to have all your drivers backed up, all your documents, then wipe the hard drive and do a clean install.

beta versions, and also brand new operating systems should NEVER be used as your main operating system, even when vista comes out legally it will be buggy and somewhat unstable in alot of respects. vista has only been testied on a tiny percentage of machines - when the world starts using it they'll have alot of work to do to fix it as the bug reports and security holes roll in.

@dustin m - if he was a legal user of it, with a legal key, he would know a little more about vista than he does.
no-too many bugs and program conflicts.it is not worth it
Vista is not out yet, at least not until next spring.
I wouldn't advise "upgrading" to Windows Visa yet. You will find out that many of your programs are not Visa compatible. Most importantly you are likely to find out that your anti-virus software will no longer work. Better hold off on Windows Visa if you want a working computer.
yes
no i dont think it is, if you want to know for sure ask the experts at the link below
never never try to use beta version. its not for the people who asks questions
To the person who posted the "it's piracy to download Vista" question, Microsoft actually released a "public beta" of Vista, although they kept it on the down-low (so to speak) to not overload their servers, since it was distributed as 2 DVD's (one x86 and one x64 ISO).

And in my opinion, you shouldn't upgrade on any "main use" computer unless you have a VERY easy way to restore (I'm thinking an image of your computer), as it will be very frustrating. Playing with beta operating systems can be fun though.
Am using Vista RC1 as I right this and have to say that I honestly can't remember the last time I booted in XP - almost everything now works well under Vista (and I use an awful lot of graphics software). And yes it sounds as if your hardware specs are compatible.

Having said that though, would be a better idea to partition your drive and dual boot - will provide you with the peace of mind knowing that XP is still there as a back-up in case an important piece of software CANNOT be installed under Vista just yet.

Overall though, have been massively impressed with Vista - and this comes from someone who was considering abandoning Windows for Suse at the beginning of the year!
Well, you should not upgrade to windows vista beta version, because of the bugs, wait until the final release, beta version is for testers to indentify bugs and other complications. I suggest you should waith untill the final release.
Go to www.microsoft.com and windows to Vista. Download evaluation of your computer for Vists readiness. I personally would wait until more bugs are worked out. Do not think you are getting the beta free. When it is released, you will have to pay.
