What's the best way to check Windows registry for errors?

Symptoms: Black screen after windows logo, does not boot up even in Safe Mode (hangs at Mup.sys listing)

Frequency: About four times in the past few weeks

Temporary Cure: Boot from CD, restore registry values in System32 directory. I do a System Restore, and everything's fine until it happens again...

Possible Causes: Corrupt Registry, Hard Drive Errors (running chkdsk now...)

so I ask you, what could cause a corrupt registry that prevents Windows XP Pro from booting up, (quite frequently)? What tools would you recommend to diagnose this?

Hello Borgman,

Have you given any thought to a Registry Cleaner? I recently used one called RegCure (~$30), along with a disk cleanup and defragment and my PC now runs much smoother.

Here is the site I used. I found them useful for information on slow PC's and registry issues.
