Possible to install on the same partition? If not, how do i create another partition without deleting my current Windows XP Pro?

No. Not possible.

You need a 2nd partition just for the Linux install and a 3rd partition for the Linux Swap File

If you want to save your files on that 1 tiny HD then get PartitionMagic or something that allows you to change the partition tables without losing all your files.

Just buy a new drive. They are dirt cheap. Price is around $1 per Gig

If you are installing Linux then you should know elementary basics such as this. Only 1 Operating System per Primary partition. And a boot record can hold a Maximum of 4 primary partitions or 3 primary and an infinite (20+) number of extended partitions.

No and no. You can't install both on the same partition, and to create a new one you have to delete all the info on the old one. Sorry. My suggestion would be to buy an external hard drive and install Linux on that.

Good Luck!
Linux has to be in a separate partition because of the type of file system it has to run on. WinXP is most likely running on an NTFS file system and you are going to need a partition that is fat32 or just free space ready for the install of Linux.

If you want to repartition your hard drive without messing up winXP, try partition magic. If you use this software, make sure you back up your stuff first. No Sw is perfect.

Glad to help

Have a nice day!
There are programs around that would let you create partitions over your actual ntfs partition without lost any data, for example partition magic, furthermore, i think there are linux's distribution that can shrink your actual partition to create a linux partition when you install linux over windows xp, you have to do some research, but i can say it can be done, of course, you have to take your previsions, back up your sensitive data first.
You cannot install on the same partition. However, if you have the Ubuntu live CD, you can use it to install Linux. It will walk you through the steps to create a new partition. I did it on my Dell Inspiron 1200 with a 30GB HDD. Works great.
