BSOD: Win XP pro sp1?

Ihave been following the first question posted by a fellow forumite on BSOD btu could not get anywhere. Here then is my problem. I got a missing hal.dll error and re-installed win xp pro sp1 but this time selected a different installation folder such that at booting I have 2 windows bootup options. Knowing the top one is my recent installation I always chose it and worked fine on my PC. Later I then got another blue screen but this time round am not thinking of re-installing, neither am I thinking of reformating my hdd. Is there anybody with solution to my problem.

if hal is missing it doesn't blue screen, you get a black screen saying hal is missing and the sky is falling. What you have here is a bad device driver. When a device driver blue screens at boot it's usually 1 of 3 things if not all 3. 1) Bad ram. test that with memtest http://www.memtest86.org. 2) Bad device driver, remove any recently installed drivers by booting into safemode. 3) your hard disk or its controller is having an issue... scandisk "might help" google hard drive testing utilities.

REFORMAT AND REINSTALL XP. get rid of all those xp partitions.
